Roller Skates vs Blades (what’s easier to learn?)

skates or blades? Apr 28, 2026

This is something I get asked all the time.

Like… every week πŸ˜…

πŸ‘‰ “What’s easier… roller skates or blades?”

And if you’re trying to decide where to start, it can feel a bit confusing.

πŸŽ₯ I break this down properly in the video here:

So first… let’s quickly look at the difference.

Roller skates (quads) have four wheels in a square.
Blades (inlines) have all the wheels in a straight line.

Same number of wheels… just set up differently.

And that’s what makes them feel so different.

If I had to describe it simply…

πŸ‘‰ roller skates feel more stable and grounded
πŸ‘‰ blades feel a bit more wobbly at first, but smoother once you’re moving

So which one is easier?

πŸ‘‰ it depends what you’re looking for

For most beginners, roller skates tend to feel easier in the beginning.

You’ve got that wider base, so standing still and finding your balance feels a bit more natural.

Blades can feel a bit tricky at first.

You’re balancing on one line, so it takes a bit more control.

But once you start rolling…

πŸ‘‰ they feel really smooth

Turning is another big difference.

Roller skates have trucks underneath them, so when you lean, they help you carve and turn.

Blades rely more on your edges and body control.

Stopping can also feel different.

Blades usually have a heel brake, which beginners often find easier at the start.

With roller skates, you’ve got toe stops, which can take a little bit more practice to get used to.

So again…

πŸ‘‰ neither is “better”
πŸ‘‰ they’re just different

Another thing to think about is where you want to skate.

Roller skates are great for:
πŸ‘‰ smoother surfaces
πŸ‘‰ dance skating
πŸ‘‰ learning fun skills

Blades are great for:
πŸ‘‰ longer distances
πŸ‘‰ outdoor paths
πŸ‘‰ building speed

And this is something I always say…

πŸ‘‰ the best skate for you is the one you’re excited to put on

Because that’s what actually keeps you showing up.

Not which one is technically easier.

If you’ve tried one and it didn’t feel great…

πŸ‘‰ don’t assume skating isn’t for you

Sometimes it’s just:
πŸ‘‰ the type of skate
πŸ‘‰ the surface
πŸ‘‰ or even just the day you’re having

And a quick tip before you switch…

If you’re on roller skates and feel like you’re slipping everywhere, check your stance.

πŸ‘‰ slight V shape, not walking straight

That alone can make a huge difference.

At the end of the day…

πŸ‘‰ both will get you skating

It just comes down to what feels right for you.

If you do decide to go with roller skates and want a bit of guidance on where to start, I’ve got a free beginner workshop that walks you through the key things to help you feel more in control.
