Is Roller Skating Good Exercise? 7 Reasons Adults Are Swapping the Gym for Skates

Aug 24, 2026

If you've been looking for a fun way to get active, you might be wondering...

Is roller skating actually good exercise?

The short answer is yes.

But probably not for the reason you think.

Most people assume roller skating is just a fun hobby or something they did as a kid. In reality, it's a fantastic way to improve your fitness, challenge your body, and build confidence—all while doing something you genuinely enjoy.

After coaching hundreds of adult beginner roller skaters, I've noticed that very few people start skating because they want to become elite athletes.

Most simply want to find an enjoyable way to move their body again.

And that's often what makes the biggest difference.

When you enjoy your exercise, you're far more likely to keep doing it.

Let's look at why roller skating has become such a popular workout for adults.

πŸŽ₯ Want to See Roller Skating in Action?

If you're curious about what roller skating looks like and why so many adults fall in love with it, I also made a YouTube video on this topic.

I share my own experience, explain why roller skating became much more than just exercise for me, and show you why it can be such an enjoyable way to stay active.

1. Roller Skating Is a Full-Body Workout

One of the biggest misconceptions about roller skating is that it only works your legs.

While your legs certainly do plenty of work, skating uses much more of your body than people realise.

As you skate, you're constantly engaging your:

  • Legs to create power.
  • Glutes for stability.
  • Core to keep you balanced.
  • Ankles to control your edges.
  • Upper body to help with posture and movement.

Instead of isolating one muscle group at a time, roller skating encourages your whole body to work together.

That's one of the reasons so many beginners tell me they're surprised by how they feel after their first few practice sessions.

It's not unusual to hear someone say,

"I didn't realise roller skating would be such a workout!"

2. It Improves Your Balance and Coordination

Balance is one of the first things people worry about when they decide to learn to roller skate.

Ironically, it's also one of the biggest benefits they'll gain from it.

Every time you skate, your body is making tiny adjustments to keep you balanced.

Over time, those small adjustments help improve your:

  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Body awareness
  • Stability
  • Weight control

These skills don't just help you on skates.

They carry over into everyday life too, whether you're walking on uneven ground, playing with your kids, or simply feeling more confident moving your body.

3. Roller Skating Gets Your Heart Rate Up

If you're wondering whether roller skating counts as cardio, the answer is definitely yes.

Depending on how you skate, it can be a fantastic cardiovascular workout.

Whether you're cruising along a shared pathway, practicing skills at your local basketball court, or skating around a rink with friends, you're constantly moving.

Many people can burn around 300–600 calories during a 45-minute skating session, depending on factors such as body weight and skating intensity.

But here's what I think matters even more.

When you're enjoying yourself, you rarely notice how much exercise you're actually getting.

You're focused on learning a new skill.

Having a laugh.

Trying again after something doesn't quite work.

Before you know it, you've been skating for the best part of an hour.

4. It's Easier to Stay Consistent

Most fitness plans don't fail because they're ineffective.

They fail because people stop doing them.

Life gets busy.

Motivation comes and goes.

And if you don't enjoy your workout, it's usually the first thing to disappear from your weekly routine.

That's where roller skating is different.

For many adults, it becomes more than just exercise.

It becomes something they genuinely look forward to.

After coaching adult beginners for several years, I've seen this happen over and over again.

People don't keep coming back because someone told them they had to exercise.

They come back because they're excited to master the next skill, celebrate another small win, or simply enjoy an hour doing something that's just for them.

Consistency is what leads to long-term results, and it's much easier to stay consistent when you're having fun.

5. Roller Skating Challenges Your Brain Too

One of the things I love most about roller skating is that there's always something new to learn.

You're not simply repeating the same movement over and over.

Every practice session asks your brain to think about:

  • Weight transfer
  • Balance
  • Timing
  • Coordination
  • Body positioning

As one skill becomes easier, another challenge appears.

Maybe it's learning to skate backwards.

Maybe it's mastering crossovers.

Or maybe it's simply feeling more relaxed and confident every time you put your skates on.

That feeling of continual progress is one of the reasons so many adults fall in love with roller skating.

It keeps your mind engaged just as much as your body.

 6. Can Roller Skating Help You Lose Weight?

If weight loss is one of your goals, roller skating can absolutely be part of a healthy lifestyle.

Like any form of exercise, the number of calories you burn will depend on factors such as your body weight, how hard you're skating, and how long you're moving for.

But here's something I think is even more important...

The best exercise for weight loss is the one you'll actually keep doing.

I've seen so many people start fitness programs with the best intentions, only to stop a month later because they weren't enjoying them.

Roller skating is different.

You don't usually put your skates on thinking, "I have to exercise today."

You put them on because you want to learn something new, spend time outdoors, catch up with friends, or simply enjoy some time to yourself.

The fitness benefits often happen naturally because you're moving consistently and enjoying the process.

7. Is Roller Skating Better Than the Gym?

This isn't really a question of which is better.

It's about which one suits you.

The gym is fantastic for building strength, improving muscle mass and following a structured training program.

Roller skating offers something different.

It helps improve:

  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Confidence
  • Body awareness

It also gives you a skill you'll continue to develop over time.

Many of my students combine both.

They enjoy going to the gym while also skating a few times each week because the two activities complement each other really well.

You don't have to choose one or the other.

Sometimes the best fitness routine is simply the one you'll stick with.

Why So Many Adults Fall in Love with Roller Skating

One of the unexpected things I've noticed after teaching hundreds of beginner adults is that roller skating often becomes about much more than fitness.

People come along hoping to learn a new skill.

They leave with new friends.

More confidence.

A hobby they genuinely enjoy.

For many of my students, skating becomes their hour each week.

An hour away from work.

Away from responsibilities.

Away from the never-ending to-do list.

It's time that's just for them.

As adults, we often spend so much time looking after everyone else that we forget what it feels like to learn something purely because it makes us happy.

Roller skating has a wonderful way of bringing that feeling back.

So to wrap I up...

Is roller skating good exercise?

Absolutely.

It's a fantastic way to improve your fitness, strengthen your body, build balance and coordination, and challenge yourself in a completely different way.

But for me, that's not even the biggest benefit.

The biggest benefit is that roller skating makes people excited to move again.

After coaching adults for the past few years, I've watched complete beginners surprise themselves with what they're capable of.

People who once said,

"I've got no balance."

"I'm too old."

"I don't think I can do this."

Now confidently skate around parks, rinks and basketball courts with huge smiles on their faces.

That's why I love teaching this sport.

Not because it's the perfect workout.

But because it helps people rediscover the joy of learning something new.

And I think we could all use a little more of that.
