How to Stop on Roller Skates for Beginners (5 Easy Ways That Actually Work)

how to stop Apr 07, 2026

If you’ve ever gone to stop on your roller skates and just… frozen  or it didn’t work the way you thought it would… you’re not alone.

I see this all the time.

Most people actually know a few ways to stop…
but in the moment, they’re not sure which stop to use.

And that’s where it all falls apart.

Because the truth is, there isn’t just one stop that works for everything.

Sometimes you’re cruising
sometimes you’ve picked up a bit of speed
and sometimes… you’ve left it a little too late 😅

So instead of relying on one stop, it’s about knowing a few options and when to use them so you can actually feel in control.

🎥 I’ve broken this all down in this video here:

When you’re just starting out, your main one is your go-to stop… the plow stop.

This is the one you want to use when you’re still in control and you’re starting to feel a bit of speed build.

The biggest thing I see people do here is stay too upright or try to force it.

Instead, think soft knees… sitting into it… and letting the skates do the work.

👉 Start it early, not when you’re already panicking.

Then you’ve got your toe stop.

This is when you need a bit more stopping power.

You’re still in control, but the plow stop just isn’t quite enough.

The key here is not to slam it down.

It’s more of a light drag… and the more you bend into it, the more it will slow you down.

If you’re moving backwards, or you need something stronger again, that’s where your backward toe stop comes in.

This one can feel a bit scary at first, but it’s actually a really stronger stop once you get used to it.

Just make sure you stay centred and don’t lean forward.

Then there’s your one foot plow stop.

This is really handy when you’ve got less space to work with.

Maybe you’re on a narrow path or there are people around.

Same idea as your plow… just using one skate instead.

Think of this as a controlled slow-down, not a quick stop.

And finally… your “just get me stopped” option 😅

The runout stop.

This is your safety option when things feel like they’re getting away from you.

Rolling onto grass or carpet and taking a few quick steps is completely fine.

👉 It doesn’t have to be perfect… it just has to be safe.

The main thing I want you to take away from all of this is…

👉 you don’t need to stop perfectly every time

You just need to feel like you’ve got options. Because once you do, that panic feeling starts to go away… and everything feels a lot more controlled.

If you’re still feeling a bit unsure or want to build more confidence on your skates, I’ve got a free beginner workshop where I walk you through the key things that help you feel more in control.
